Dear Mount Greylock Regional School Community,

We hope that this email finds you and your families safe and well.

The MGRSD Remote Learning Plan articulates what you can expect with regard to teaching and learning with the closing of school buildings and a shift to remote learning.

We encourage families to access the MGRSD Instructional Continuity Learning Plan for tutorials with regard to using the Districts various computer platforms. In addition some teachers will be posting their teacher sites in the appropriate grade level or content areas.  Within this page we have added Community Corner which hosts segments of yoga for all ages, community readers and soon will have musical engagement and GreylockPlays.  

We have heard from families and students about Zoom's security.  Today, April 9, Zoom implemented new levels of safeguarding to protect the privacy of Zoom classrooms.  The most visible change is that meeting hosts will see an option in the Zoom meeting controls called Security. This new icon simplifies how hosts can quickly find and enable many of Zoom’s in-meeting security features. Updates to Zoom and our other platforms are constantly provided to teachers.

April 5 - Remote Learning Privacy

April 5, 2020

Dear Faculty, Staff, Students and Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

As a result of Governor Baker’s recent decision to extend school closures through Monday May 4, 2020, we  would like to provide you with information about our plan to keep your children engaged in meaningful learning experiences.  The District has carefully considered various remote learning options and has selected Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, Google Suite/Classroom or Canvas based upon factors including available features, reliability, ease of use/access, and privacy/confidentiality protections.  All four tools, when used with school accounts, comply with state and federal regulations that protect student privacy (FERPA, COPPA, CIPA, MA Student Records law). The District will continue to monitor the platforms to ensure that they continue to meet expectations with regard to student safety and privacy according to state and federal guidelines. During this extended school closure, the Mount Greylock Regional School District will continue to take all reasonable measures to preserve your privacy and the privacy of your child, and each of our educators will continue to maintain the privacy of your child’s student record information.

When in a Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, Canvas or Google Suite/Classroom, your child will be able to see the names of other members in the class on the "students" tab, including family members if they are invited into the Classroom.  In a general online Classroom, there is no distinction between special education and non-special education students.   With our specially designed classrooms, all student members are special education students therefore; any invited guest will be able to see the class list. However, disability and IEP information remains confidential.  It is important for all parent(s)/guardian(s) and students participating in these online learning opportunities to understand that their participation is conditioned upon agreeing to comply with all applicable State and Federal Laws.  Accordingly, only those invited to participate in a Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, Canvas or Google Suite/Classroom may do so, and any recording, saving, or sharing of the meeting with others is prohibited. 

As we navigate our way through these difficult and unique times, we want to thank all families for their patience and understanding.  Our goal is to ensure that everyone has access to meaningful learning opportunities offered by the Mount Greylock Regional School District, and we will work with families to ensure successful implementation.  If your child does not have access to online connectivity or a device capable of accessing Google Classroom, Class Dojo or Zoom for Education, or is in need of technical support, please contact  your child's principal who can assist you with these concerns.

April 4: Update from the Superintendent

Good evening,

Thank you all for your patience and flexibility during this time. 

Today, I had hoped to have all documents ready to send out and we are now very close.

We are getting inquires daily on some items. The plan is to send as much out in one eblast to help slow the email traffic many are experiencing.

We are working on the final touches of the privacy statements to make sure the four platforms we are proposing all meet compliance standards. We will be utilizing Zoom for Education, Google Suites, Canvas and Class Dojo. Teachers, if they haven’t already, will be reaching out in the coming days to let you know which platform they will be utilizing. If you have trouble accessing the platform please contact your building Principal. We will be posting parent and student tutorials on the website to assist in ease of use on the platforms. Teachers will continue to receive training as well through this transition. 

 

We continue to have meal offerings through the Grab & Go program as well as other meal resources posted on the website. We are delivering Monday and Tuesday’s meal on Monday. Wednesday and Thursday’s meal on Wednesday and will bring Friday separately. 

McCann will also be offering a pick up only dinner time meal Monday – Friday, from 4-5PM

This week we were able to add Nolan Pratt to the weekly update broadcast with town Manager Jason Hoch and myself, so Williamstown and Lanesborough residents can hear what is happening in each town. 

We shared exciting news for Lanesborough Elementary, that Nina Rather’s artwork that was submitted through the town art contest and will be the cover of the Lanesborough annual report. Join me in congratulating Nina. 

 

We have created a community corner site on the website which has yoga and community readers. Thank you, Julie, Lieut. and Dr. Ziemba, PJ and the volunteer firefighters in Lanesborough for helping build the community corner. We will have additional readers in the coming weeks.

March 27: Letter to Families

Dear Families of MGRSD students,

Let us begin by saying how much we miss all of our students.  We are concerned for our students’ health and well-being, as well as their families’. Although we have never experienced an extended closure before, the MGRSD family of students, parents, educators and community has risen to the occasion. We are hoping you are doing well and staying healthy while still practicing social distancing. We would like to thank everyone for your support and kindness, especially our health care professionals, first responders, and all others who are being called to serve on the front lines.

As you know, Governor Baker has now extended school closures until May 4. Over the next several weeks, we will be transitioning to an instructional continuity learning plan. Though it may feel that we are creating and launching a brand new program of teaching and learning, a daunting task, we are fortunate to work in a district rich in both human and technological resources. Many of the tools and technological platforms we will utilize are ones we already use and with which our students are familiar. We are not starting from zero. It will not be easy and there will surely be mistakes, problems and concerns along the way. However, there will also be many successes. We are looking forward to continuing to work together to support students’ learning the best we can during these new and very unusual times.

Per the guidance of the commissioner, in early April our instructional continuity experiences will be required, and you will be receiving communication from teachers and related service providers in the district. Please expect more information on this in the coming week.

As we work to transition to our formal instructional continuity learning plan, we have developed an enhanced section for families and students on our website which you can use over the coming week as we get more formal programming going. We have organized the site by grade spans and given brief descriptions of all resources. We have also provided broad basic schedules for you to follow at home if you so choose. Remember, during the period between March 16 - April 6, it is optional, albeit encouraged, for students to participate in the learning activities we provide.

This afternoon Governor Baker announced that schools will remain closed through at least May 4. Further guidance is expected from the Commissioner of Education in the coming days. Please be patient; the District's Administrative team members are already starting to work on implementation of that order. Additional information will be shared as soon as possible as it becomes available.

Dear Mount Greylock Regional School District Community,

We are writing to give the community an update on the status of our closure and available resources and to remind families about accessing meals over the next three weeks. As was mentioned in the call and letter on Friday, the Mount Greylock Regional School District will remain closed until March 30, 2020. Based on the Governor’s decision last night, we will extend that period and remain closed until Tuesday, April 7. 2020. This decision was made in an effort to limit any potential exposure of our students and staff to the COVID-19 novel coronavirus.

The community recognizes that our families may be challenged to provide nutritious meals for their children during this unexpected time away from school. As such, the Mount Greylock Regional School District will be offering access to grab-and-go lunches Monday through Friday for the next three weeks. Meals will be available for pick-up at the Lanesborough Elementary School and Williamstown Elementary School main entrances between 9:30 and 10:30 each day.  In an attempt to assist the district in planning, you are asked to:

Call or email the food service department the day before using the following:

  • Leave a message that includes the number of lunches you need and which school will be your pick-up location: Lanesborough Elementary School or Williamstown Elementary School 
  • Please identify the student name(s) for whom you are picking up meals.
  • In order to assist us in advance planning, please indicate whether you will be accessing this meal service over the remaining days.
 
 
 
 

It is our sincere desire to help students feel connected to school and intellectually engaged during the closure, and the Department of Education is expecting schools to provide enrichment resources for students as a means of staying connected with school. However, distance learning programs are not being recognized by DESE as formal time on learning, and to that end schools are not being asked to replicate a regular school day nor course content. As a district, we will provide resources that can be used independently. When able, students may find teachers communicating with families directly about extension activities as well. Please note that these learning experiences are not mandatory and are not credit bearing. However, we encourage students to participate as a way of keeping themselves intellectually engaged. 

If your child currently receives special education services, you will be receiving outreach from the Acting Director of Pupil Services, Patrick Priester, in the coming days. Many of the educational links we have provided will help your child maintain skills during the closure. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Priester at [email protected].

Regarding spring season athletics, please know that the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has delayed the start of the season to a date to be determined this afternoon. As such, there will be no tryouts for athletic teams until that date. Should this change, you will be notified by Lindsey von Holtz, Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars.

In closing, these are unprecedented times, and this drastic step is meant to provide reduced exposure for students, staff members, and their families. Please continue doing the recommended actions for maintaining health such as frequent hand washing, social distancing, rest, hydration, exercise and good nutrition. PRESS RELEASE

Our superintendents are facing uncharted times. COVID-19 has created major disruptions to our way of life as we see many organizations, businesses and education communities changing daily operations.

During the past two weeks, we have seen increasing concerns with the care and well being of our populations. In our schools, superintendents are hearing from parents, local Board of Health and community medical experts. As such, our superintendents are in close communication with neighboring colleagues and other resources as they consider next steps in their decision making.

Unfortunately, during the past two weeks, we have received little or no guidance from state and federal organizations.  In the lack of clear, definitive guidelines, the Superintendents are collaborating to provide leadership during this critical time and to ensure the safety and well being of their communities.

Yesterday, superintendents in various areas of the Commonwealth used local information and decided to close schools for 1 – 2 weeks until we have more understanding of how Coronavirus evolves. Many additional schools will be exercising this decision today and early next week. M.A.S.S. has supported these decisions. Our superintendents have no higher priority than student safety. These closures will allow the opportunity to evaluate local conditions and allow the medical community time to better advise future decisions.

March 13: Message from the Superintendent

Dear Mount Greylock Regional School District Community,

Out of an abundance of caution for our students and faculty, and in tandem with all Berkshire County Schools, the Mount Greylock Regional School District (MGRSD) will be closed for two weeks beginning Monday March 16. At present, we plan to re-open on Monday March 30.

It is important to note that the district currently has no students or staff with presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19. However, we recognize that neighboring communities do have cases. As a precautionary measure and to limit the potential of community spread, we have made the decision to close school.

Communication with our students, families, and community is of utmost importance to us and know that as plans are developed, schools will be in touch with you. The district has established a page of our communications regarding COVID-10 as well as links to some valuable resources.

March 11: Update


Dear MGRSD Community:

The news this week has reported information regarding the closure of a number of colleges and universities across the country. Today, Williams College announced they will be closing effective Friday and will complete their school year through online courses. MCLA has extended their spring break a week to allow their staff to clean and disinfect high traffic areas. These two local announcements have, understandably, prompted a number of families to contact our three schools to inquire about closures at the elementary and middle/high schools.

Our schools remain at low risk, and based on current recommendations for K-12 schools by departments of health and the CDC, the Mount Greylock Regional School District will remain open. We are in continued close contact with our local and state boards of health, town leaders, as well as other Berkshire County school districts, and all are working together to make informed decisions in the best interest of our students, families and staff.

While our schools remain open, we will continue our strong focus on heightened sanitization of all spaces within the buildings as well as an emphasis on personal wellness and hygiene - proper hand washing, covering mouths and noses, nutrition/sleep, etc… We will also continue to ask families to keep their children home if they are sick and exhibiting any of the symptoms noted below:

  • temperature greater than 100
  • coughing
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • any rash not yet diagnosed by a physician
  • red or pink itchy eye and/or drainage from eye
  • any contagious illness such as chicken pox, strep throat or flu
  • shortness of breath

 

We will continue to limit visitors to our schools and use of our buildings by outside groups, cancel field trips, postpone public gatherings/meetings, and professional development/meetings that require staff to travel outside the district. We recently sent you a list of canceled events for this week and will share updated information with you at week’s end.

Today the administrative team, including the school nurses, met to discuss the most recent updates regarding COVID-19 in the Northern Berkshire community. In an effort to limit opportunities for the virus to spread, the administration made the decision to cancel events listed below for this week. March 8: COVID -19 Information


Dear Mount Greylock Regional School District Families,

We are aware that a resident in North Berkshire County was found presumptive positive for the Novel Coronavirus this weekend.  We understand that we may hear of more cases.  On Sunday afternoon, administrators from the district and all three schools met with town officials (including the Town Manager and Health Inspectors) as well as law enforcement to review facts related to the current situation with the Department of Public Health.

  • Our schools remain at low risk.
  • We will continue our cleaning protocols, which include the use of the CDC-recommended sanitizer.
  • Preventative handwashing and other proactive measures detailed in the letter below are promoted and practiced.
 

In the interest of being proactive, we will monitor the situations in surrounding towns carefully and make decisions regarding noncritical events scheduled at the three schools over the coming days. 

The decisions we make today may change tomorrow given the evolving nature of this situation.  Please be rest assured we are closely monitoring developments with our community partners.  We look forward to and appreciate your continued flexibility and patience.

We understand that many families have questions regarding the recent outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and how it may impact our local community. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is providing daily updates and recommendations. Please click on the following link to stay updated https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.

While this is a public health concern, the CDC continues to report that the immediate risk to the general public remains low at this time. Yet, in today’s connected world, with a large number of district families traveling during school vacation weeks, the potential for infectious disease is always of concern. As with seasonal flu and strep infections, there are general precautions we can all take to remain as healthy as possible.

  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Use Alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
  • When coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. You can also cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Throw used tissues in the trash and immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid sharing drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, dishes, towels or other items. Wash these items thoroughly with soap and water after use.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick whenever possible.
  • Practice other good health habits: Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. 
 

It is important to keep children home from school when they are ill. If your child has any of the following symptoms please keep them home from school:

  • temperature greater than 100.4
  • coughing
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • any rash not yet diagnosed by a physician
  • red or pink itchy eye and/or drainage from eye
  • any contagious illness such as chicken pox, strep throat or flu.

March 3: Travel Survey Request Letter


Dear Mount Greylock Regional School District Parents, Guardians & Staff,

There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our students and staff. To that end, our district administrative team and health professionals have been following daily developments regarding the COVID-19 virus. While this is a public health concern, the CDC continues to report that the immediate risk to the general public in Massachusetts remains low at this time. Yet, in today’s connected world, with a large number of district families traveling during school vacation weeks, the potential for infectious disease is always of concern, and schools are being encouraged to be in close contact with families regarding plans that involve travel. Knowing that there are upcoming vacations for our local colleges and independent schools which employ a large percentage of our families, we are writing to ask for your help.

If you are planning to travel, especially out of the country, or if you have done so recently, we are asking for your voluntary participation in our surveyInformation shared via the survey will be considered confidential and only accessible by the administration team (principals and superintendent). Depending upon the travel destination, and following evolving information shared by the CDC, the district may ask families to participate in voluntary health screening for their children at home or at school upon your return. While your participation in the survey is completely voluntary, we hope you will choose to do so and truly appreciate your understanding and help as we move forward with our constant goal of caring for our community.

COVID-19 is an evolving health issue, and we will continue to update you as information is shared with us. Please rest assured that we are monitoring student health concerns and best practices for community welfare. We are in close communication with Jeff Kennedy and Ed Fahey of the Williamstown and Lanesborough Boards of Health, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health/School Health Unit, as well as pediatric health care providers in the community. 

As always, the standard procedures for addressing the cold and flu season are best to keep us all healthy. Please remind your children of these.

  • Proper handwashing is critical to good health
  • Covering your mouth when sneezing and coughing
  • Staying rested, hydrated, and well-fed
  • Avoiding others who are sick.

We understand that many families have questions regarding the recent outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and how it may impact our local community. While this is a public health concern, the CDC continues to report that the immediate risk to the general public remains low at this time. Yet, in today’s connected world, with a large number of district families traveling during school vacation weeks, the potential for infectious disease is always of concern. As with seasonal flu and strep infections, there are general precautions we can all take to remain as healthy as possible.

  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Use Alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
