Dear Mount Greylock Students and Families,

I hope this letter finds you well after a great summer.  With September around the corner, I know many of you have been eagerly awaiting news about your first day at Mount Greylock.  As communicated yesterday and early this morning, the new first day of school will be Monday, September 10.

To help everyone acclimate to the new building, we will be offering daytime and evening tours before school starts.   Dates and times are listed below. Students who would like to give tours after they have seen the building themselves can sign up here.  Community Service hours will be available.

Student Schedules

Likely the most eagerly awaited document is the student schedule. They are available on PowerSchool and will be available in hardcopy during tours and on the first day of school.

The bell schedule has been redesigned to accommodate three lunch periods (Lunch A – Middle School; Lunch B – High School and Lunch C – High School).  The color-coded comprehensive bell schedule as well as individual schedules connected to each lunch are available on our website.  Follow the link to “Important Documents.” Consider downloading your schedule and filling in the blocks with your classes.  It will make navigating your day easier.

Other differences in the new schedule include a longer break and a slightly shorter Directed Study.  The passing period remains four minutes.

Students wishing to make changes to their schedules or arrange a drop/add should make an appointment with their counselor.  You can do that by contacting Sarah Tierney, Guidance Department Secretary at or 413.458.9582, ext. 1250.  She can share your request with your counselor who will be available before school begins.  Please note that meetings are prioritized for students who are missing periods from their schedules.

Students are assigned lockers in the academic wing. Generally, the distribution is as follows:

Third Floor

7th and 8th graders

Second Floor

9th and 10th graders

First Floor

11th and 12th graders

However, because of enrollments, some 8th graders have lockers on the second floor and 10th graders have lockers on the first floor. The new building’s hallway lockers reflect student recommendations.  They are 17x33x12 inches and can accommodate plenty of books and gear.  They also have Master locks attached to provide added security.  Students will see both their locker number and combination on their printed PowerSchool schedules, which, as noted, will be distributed during tours and on the first day of school.  Students will have a chance to practice opening lockers during tours if they wish.

The Master locks are opened with three numbers following the traditional pattern:

Sample combination:  18-28-09

Turn knob right to 18

Turn knob left past 18 to 28

Turn knob right to 09

Lift latch to open

The Wellness lockers will also be assigned during Physical Education classes by the Wellness Department members.  Those lockers do not have Master locks attached, and we encourage students to bring their own combination lock.

Our website at continues to be a resource for all members of the community.  We encourage you to explore the site to see how it is organized and find pages that might be most useful to you. Please check it often. The News & Announcements page showcases student and faculty accomplishments and highlights important events.  The MGRSD Today page provides links to everything from lunch menus to MG weather station updates to the Greylock Echo and Greylock Snow Day blogs.  We also encourage you to follow two Twitter accounts – either directly or via the MGRSD Today page. @MGMounties provides general news and @AthleticsMG tweets team news.

PowerSchool Account

Mount Greylock issues electronic report cards and sends most of its school- and grade-wide communications through PowerSchool accounts.  To ensure that your email addresses are current, please review the Demographic Information on your PowerSchool account, make necessary adjustments and submit your changes to save them.  If you would prefer a paper demographic form on which to make changes, please contact Patsy Worley at . If you are new to the school, information about setting up a PowerSchool account will arrive in a separate communication.

Driving to School and Bus Schedules

Along with a new building, we have a new parking lot, complete with planted islands to both order and slow traffic. Please pay attention to the new directional arrows.  On the first day of school, staff and administration will be outside guiding drop-offs and pick-ups.

As always, we encourage students to take buses to and from school.  The routes have just been released for 2018-2019 and have been posted; they can be found on the Important Documents page on the website.  Regular school day schedules as well as late bus schedules are posted.  Mount Greylock runs two after-school 5:15 pm buses daily - one towards Lanesborough and the other towards Williamstown.  On the rare occasion that a bus will not run (on a half-day, for example), announcements will be made.

Over the next few days, please remember to look for future emails from Mount Greylock relevant to the start of school. The coming school year promises to be exciting as we move forward with our educational program and the building project.  It will also require flexibility and patience; we thank you for yours in advance.

We look forward to seeing you!  Enjoy the remaining days of summer.

Yours sincerely,

Mary A. MacDonald, Principal
