The middle school “Students Organizing Change” club (known as SOC) has had a fantastic year. For starters, we made our first ever Instagram account which highlights the work we are doing in the school and wider community. You can find the account at mgrhs_soc. In addition, we have made new SOC t-shirts for our members that were graciously supported by the American Legion of Williamstown. In February, we hosted a 3v3 basketball tournament for middle school students where we raised money and had a “ball”. In March, we have also co-hosted a middle-school dance along with the Peer Team, which was well attended and lots of fun. We also assisted with the Williamstown Food Pantry, where we helped sort food and unload trucks. Additionally, we created a partnership with the Berkshire Humane Society, in which we posted flyers at local businesses to raise awareness and support for animal adoption. This spring, SOC members presented different charities for the group to consider as recipients for a SOC donation. After voting, we decided to donate $500 to the Brooke Fund, which helps working horses in 3rd world countries, and we donated $250 to the Northern Berkshire Santa Fund, which provides Christmas gifts such as toys and games for children in need. In addition, we donated $250 to Mount Greylock After Prom, which helps keep our prom-goers safe. Lastly, we are ending the year by hosting a bowling party for the SOC members at Mingo’s.
Astonishingly, we accomplished all of these deeds after a late start. In November, Mrs. Barrett and Mr. Romaker stepped up to advise the club and we hit the ground running. Mrs. Price and Miss Mary heard about the good work that we were doing, volunteered their time, and also joined the club. The approximately 20 members of the 2018-2019 SOC club have truly encapsulated the SOC motto: “Having fun and Helping Others.” As MG middle school students, we are proud to have made a difference this year in our school, local, and global communities. And we already have a list of ideas for next year!
