National Honor Society
Selection of Members
The selection of members to this chapter shall be by majority vote of the Faculty Council which consists of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter advisor shall be the sixth, nonvoting member of the Faculty Council.
The selection of active members shall be held once a year after the close of quarter 1. Active members are selected in their junior or senior year.
Prior to the final selection, the following shall occur:
- Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility. Students must have a GPA of 3.7, and must maintain a GPA of 3.7 during membership.
- The faculty shall be requested to evaluate character and leadership traits of candidates determined to be scholastically eligible, and to submit that information to the Faculty Council.
- The Faculty Council shall review the faculty evaluations and other relevant information to determine those who fully meet the selection criteria for membership. Criteria for membership are a GPA of 3.7 and evidence of good character, leadership, and service in the school and local community. Examples of instances in which a student might not meet the criteria for character or leadership would be:
- evidence of lack of academic integrity
- undertaking an illegal activity
- suspension from school or sports
- reliable community complaints concerning character: this may look like students discussing in private to a guidance counselor concerns of bullying-like behavior by the candidate; multiple faculty observations of disrespectful, mean-spirited, or poor role-model behavior; or other possible reliable sources of information concerning character.
All students who are found to be eligible by the Faculty Council shall be notified and asked to complete a brief essay outlining how they have illustrated 3 of the 4 traits of the National Honor Society: character, leadership, and service. They will also be asked come up with and describe a community service project they believe the NHS could complete that would benefit the school or wider community.
After receiving the essays and going through a final review of the candidates, the Faculty Council will make a list of students invited to join the Mount Greylock National Honor Society (MGNHS). Final candidates will have fulfilled and submitted satisfactory written evidence to substantiate the 4 requirements of NHS membership: scholarship, character, leadership, and service, as well as submitted a community service project idea.
Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony.
An active member of the NHS who transfers from this school will be given an official letter indicating the status of his/her membership.
An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The new member must maintain MGNHS requirements for this chapter in order to retain his/her membership.
