Email Sent 8/26:

Good Afternoon,

I hope you are well.

As promised here are two updates you'd likely want to know about sooner rather than later:

Fall Athletic Update:

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) in combination with DESE recently published athletic guidelines and an updated season calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. This guidance specified that athletic competition would remain local for the fall season. While a list of sports was included in the release, individual schools in collaboration with local leagues and District Athletic Committees  will make the final determination regarding athletic programs that can safely be provided on each campus. Schools within Berkshire County have been working together to determine which sports, if any, that league competition can safely occur this fall. The District School Committee will be weighing in regarding the possibility of any fall athletic programs at Mount Greylock this Thursday, August 27th during the 4pm meeting.

Influenza Vaccine Update:

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, (105 CMR 220.500) beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, influenza vaccine will be required for school attendance for all students Kindergarten through Grade 12 each school year. Students must receive the vaccine for the current season by December 31, 2020.  This does not apply to students who have a medical or religious exemption.

This new requirement is in addition to the existing school immunization requirements. Students that are using remote education are not exempt, unless either a medical or religious exemption is provided.
You should work with your child's doctor to get his/her immunization record or vaccination that is missing.  If you are unable to get an immunization appointment with your child's health care provider, call your local health department. If you have questions about immunizations that are required for school, please call your child's doctor or the school nurse. The updated table of immunization requirements for the upcoming school year can be found at

Prior to the start of school, I plan to send out our "2020-2021 Unique Circumstances Handbook Addendum," which outlines general changes in operations based on the COVID-19 pandemic.   However, as soon as I get pertinent  information I'll send it along via email.  Also attached is information from the School Nurse.

Email Sent 8/26:

Good Afternoon MG Students and Families,

Here are a few more updates...

Guidance - Guidance counselors are in the process of filling students' scheduling holes and moving elective classes so that students will have greater access to their 1st choices. That said, they are making changes to schedules as I write this.  ALL students should check their schedules this weekend.  If you did not get a core class (Eng, Math, Sci, Wellness, World Lang. or an elective)  that you asked for it is because of a scheduling conflict exists and you will have to make the difficult decision to choose between limited options.  For those of you who have already emailed your counselors, they will be reaching out to you soon.  Please be patient and know that each of you will be prioritized as soon as possible.

Lost and Found- We still have lots of stuff (clothes, shoes, binders, lunch boxes, etc.) in our lost and found from last spring.  Contact Mr. Shebar to set up a time to pick up your stuff.  Anything not picked up by Friday (9/11) will be donated.

Chromebooks-  As part of planning for the reopening of school, MGRSD will be providing all PreK - 12 students with a school-issued Chromebook.  This will allow content-filtered, easy access to District platforms and programs for every student.  It is the expectation that the Chromebooks will be used by all students regardless of whether they are at home or in school, participating remotely or in-person.  Devices will be insured by the District.  If you already have a school-issued device at home, there is no need to do anything at this time.

All 7th, 8th and new high school students as well as high school students who have not received a Chromebook will need to complete this task.

To register for a Chromebook, please review and read Acceptable Use Policy and fill out this form prior to arriving at your designated time.   The 1:1 Chromebook Initiative FAQ / Handbook Procedures and Information is also available for your review as well

Final Chromebook distribution will be on Wednesday (9/2) between 8am and 4pm.  Please drive up to the main enterance and Mr. Shebar or Mrs. Barrett will assist you.

Gaggle - As we prepare for the opening of a new school year, we are pleased to let you know about our enhanced efforts for student online safety. MGRSD will partner with Gaggle to keep students safe when they use G Suite for Education (Google Docs, Classroom, Gmail, etc...). The Gaggle safety management solution for G Suite proactively protects students and ensures that they are safely and correctly using school-provided digital tools.

The Gaggle safety management solution uses a combination of artificial intelligence and trained safety experts to provide real-time analysis and review of students' use of online tools within the G Suite. It constantly scans accounts for harmful content and alerts school officials when students show signs of self-harm, depression, thoughts of suicide, substance abuse, cyberbullying, credible threats of violence against others, or other harmful situations. With this solution, MGRSD can proactively identify students who are struggling, provide support where needed, and create a safer school environment.

Principals, as well as the Director of Operations, serve as an emergency contact with Gaggle and will be notified when a situation is discovered that poses a possible threat to the health or safety of a student. When student content is flagged and reviewed by Gaggle, it is assigned a category relative to level of concern, and a confidential notification is sent to the school's emergency contact by email, phone, and/or SMS text depending on the situation. The school will then use its student handbook, rubric of expectations, and student support team, as applicable, to determine what, if any, steps will be taken next. Responses may range from a discussion with the student as a learning experience, to referrals to an outside agency in the event of a crisis, and much in between. In all cases, parents/guardians will be informed.

(About Gaggle- Since 1999, Gaggle has been the leader in helping K-12 districts manage student safety on school-provided technology. Using a robust combination of both artificial intelligence and trained safety experts, the safety solution proactively assists districts 24/7/365 in the prevention of student suicide, bullying, inappropriate behaviors, school violence, and other harmful situations. Most importantly, Gaggle continues to help hundreds of districts across all 50 states avoid tragedies and save lives, while also protecting their liability. For more information, visit and follow Gaggle on Twitter at @Gaggle_K12.)

Lunch- MG will offer free lunches between Monday (9/1) and Tuesday (9/15) for any MG student who requests it.  Similar to how we operated over the summer, interested students need to email lunches@mgrhs.or call 458-9582 ext. 1195 at least 12 hours in advance.  Lunches will be available for pick at either Lanesborough or Williamstown Elementary schools between 10 and 11am.  See attached menu with additional details.  Additional information will be published soon regarding the lunch ordering process starting on Wednesday (9/16).
