Dear Students and Families,
We hope this letter finds you enjoying a fun-filled but relaxing summer.
A packet of important documents was mailed to your home earlier in the month; many (particularly the goldenrod colored forms) need to be completed and returned to the Main Office on the first day back – or before if you happen to be up at Mount Greylock. In addition, a series of thematically organized emails with attachments will be sent to you. Some will be targeted to your specific grade; others will provide updates around general programs like athletics, co-curricular activities, school-day activities, and family/community groups. We switched to emailing this information three years ago with the hope that it would be easier for students and families to manage the barrage of information that arrives in August. Families who require hard copies of these subsequent mailings may contact Nancy McMullen in the Main Office at email@example.com or 413.458.9582, ext. 102.
School Building Project
Here at Mount Greylock, the building project has progressed substantially since June. Most of the new building’s structure will be erected by the time you return in September. The gymnasium remains under construction and will be ready for classes in early November. In the interim, PE classes will take place outside, in the west corridor fitness room or occasionally in other spaces. Based on the current construction schedule, the gymnasium and associated rooms will be open for full use in early January.
Parking and the traffic flow will be altered slightly during this phase of construction. On the first day of school, staff and administration will be outside guiding drop-offs and pick-ups.
To help everyone acclimate to the building, we are offering tours for all students and families August 29th – August 31st from 11:00 – 1:00. There is no need to call for a tour; just show up at the Main Office during the scheduled times.
Likely the most eagerly awaited document in this packet is the student schedule. Many students enrolled in Mount Greylock last year have probably previewed their schedules on PowerSchool. Please review the paper schedule carefully.
If you require an appointment with your counselor or wish to arrange drop/add a course, please contact Sarah Tierney, Guidance Department Secretary at firstname.lastname@example.org or 413.458.9582, ext. 162. Over the summer, she works on Wednesdays. She can share your request with your counselor; PJ Pannesco, Jessica Casalinova and Beverly Maselli will return to school the week of August 28th.
In addition to the week before school, students may schedule appointments for drop/add in the first three days of school. Please note that priority for appointments will be given to students whose schedules face more substantial conflicts, especially around core classes.
Documents to complete and return
The goldenrod documents in this packet include forms to be reviewed, completed, signed and returned to the Main Office at the start of school. Your attention to these forms is greatly appreciated.
Mount Greylock welcomes many students new to the school and area in September across all grades. New faculty and staff will also be joining us:
- Joaquin Bernal – Spanish – long term substitute
- Amy Gerner – Director of Food Services
- James Leighton – Interim Assistant Principal
- Paul Johnson -- Latin
- Josh Romaker – Mathematics
- David Zaldivar – Wellness
Our website at www.mgrhs.org continues to be a resource for all members of the community. We encourage you to explore the site to see how it is organized and find pages that might be most useful to you. The News & Announcements page showcases student and faculty accomplishments and highlights important events. The MGRSD Today page provides links to everything from lunch menus to MG weather station updates to the Greylock Echo and Greylock Snow Day blogs. We also encourage you to follow two Twitter accounts – either directly or via the MGRSD Today page. @MGMounties provides general news and @AthleticsMG tweets team news.
Power School Account
Mount Greylock issues electronic report cards and sends most of its school- and grade-wide communications through Power School accounts. To ensure that your email addresses are current, please review the white Demographic Information form in this packet, make necessary adjustments and return to the Main Office. You may also edit your information directly on Power School. If you are new to the school, information about setting up a Power School account will arrive in a separate mailing.
Driving to School and Bus Schedules
The parking lot is no longer the moonscape it has been for the last few months after some temporary resurfacing. Its footprint is smaller, but it will accommodate vehicles for school and related events. Please pay attention to the new directional arrows painted on the surface as well as the Jersey barriers placed to channel bus, foot and car traffic.
As always, we encourage students to take buses to and from school. The routes have just been released for 2017-2018 on the website; they can be found here on the "Important Documents" page. Regular school day schedules as well as late bus schedules are posted. Mount Greylock runs two after-school 5:15 pm buses daily - one towards Lanesborough and the other towards Williamstown. On the rare occasion that a bus will not run (on a half-day, for example), announcements will be made.
What is in this package?
- Student schedule
- Demographic information sheet
- Nuts & Bolts, a quick reference to navigating Mount Greylock
- Bell schedule – this year we have shifted to a full rotation over five days
- A fill-in-the blank weekly schedule (look for a digital version in a future email)
- Academic year calendar
- Form to withhold consent for photographing, filming and displaying child’s schoolwork
- Letter and forms from Nurse Nichole Russell
- Application for a locker
- Computer network/internet access agreement
- Letter to military families
Over the next week, please remember to look for future emails from Mount Greylock relevant to the start of school. The coming school year promises to be exciting as we move forward with our educational program and the building project. It will also require flexibility and patience; we thank you for yours in advance.
The new school year begins on Tuesday, September 5th. You will be following the Tuesday schedule, which begins with Block 2. Consider wearing red and white on the very first day to show your Mountie spirit. We look forward to seeing you! Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer.
