Dear Mount Greylock Family,

This has been a long week with Monday’s news that Marj Keeley passed away over the weekend. Since 1999, Marj has taught Latin at Mount Greylock and been a vibrant figure in school, advising the Junior Classical League, Student Council, the Class of 2012, and innumerable independent studies and senior projects. Marj’s infectious laugh and ready smile brought cheer to the various corridors she occupied over the years. Marj knew everyone, and everyone knew her.

The Mount Greylock community reeled with the news of Marj’s passing, but it also showed its compassion and fortitude.  Faculty, staff, students and families have supported each other, and remembered Marj with tears, humor and love. Faculty and staff provided counsel and coverage. Students kept an eye on each other. Parents emailed kind offers of support and sympathy.  And in a gesture that would surely make Marj so proud, JCL officers opened its already-scheduled 2017 induction on Wednesday to the wider school community.  Members celebrated Marj’s impact on their lives as scholars and individuals in a beautiful, student-organized event.

Many people have asked us how they might convey their sympathy and honor Marj in a more tangible way.  We have spoken with Marj’s parents a number of times over the week.  They are not planning a memorial in the Berkshires but would sincerely welcome written expressions of sympathy; you can send notes to:

Contributions may be made in Marj’s name to the Massachusetts Junior Classical League, which plans to fund scholarships to the State and National conventions in Marj’s name.  Send checks made out to Mass JCL with “in honor of Marjorie Keeley” in the memo section to:

With February Break before us, we wish you a week of rest, good health and fun. It’s been quite a winter; spring is not too far away.

Kindest regards,
