Words Are Wonderful is an annual, community-wide celebration of the power and magic of words. Enjoy these FREE events and support the Williamstown Elementary School’s love of language.



Monday, October 24

Author Emily Raabe

Emily Raabe is the author of historical books (Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase) as well as fantasy fiction for kids grade 3-8. Her very popular Lost Children of the Far Islands is a story that explores the secret island discovered by 3 children who come to realize they can transform themselves into animals. Filled with magic, excitement, and the danger and delights of the sea, this is an all-engrossing fantasy-adventure story. Emily will lead children in writing their own Selkie myths.

TV Studio Production Field Trip @Willinet Studio

Lights, camera, action! Try your hand at all aspects of studio production during this after-school workshop for nine 5th and 6th grade students.  Students enter a lottery to reserve a spot!


3:15-5:15 pm    Meet in the school lobby and walk with parent chaperone to the Willinet Studio. Parents pick up children at the studio.



Tuesday, October 25

Author Nancy Castaldo

Local (Chatham, NY) author, Nancy Castaldo, a recipient of the New York State Outdoor Education Association’s Art and Literature award, is the author of several noonfiction books, including the Crystal Kite Award winner Sniffer  Dogs: How Dogs (and Their Noses) Save the World, the picture book, Pizza for the Queen, and the adventurous tale of Nelly Bly in The Race Around the World. We encourage you to visit Nancy Castaldo’s website: www.nancycastaldo.com, where you’ll find more information on her work.


Nancy will spend a full day in Williamstown visiting grades PK-3 at WES and then presenting an after-school workshop, “Sniffing Out a Good Story,” for grades 3 and up at the Milne Library!


9:00 am    Assembly for grades PK-1st grades, reading Pizza for the Queen

10:00 am    Assembly for grades 2 and 3, reading from her biography of Nelly Bly,  The Race Around the World (Totally True Adventures), about a journalist who broke barriers. Connections will be made between historical and current examples of women making history.

3:30-4:15 pm    MILNE LIBRARY PRESENTATION for grades 3 and up on sniffer dogs and Sniffing Out a Good Story.  Special visit by Williamstown Police Officer and canine guest!

10:30 am  Pre-school stories and a craft (all ages welcome but stories geared to PK)


Wednesday, October 26

Costume Parade

Come to school dressed as your favorite book character (be sure to bring your book!) or word. We’ll parade in front of the school and for our neighbors at the Harper Center. Spectators welcome!


9:00 am in front of WES, Church Street


WES PTO Book Fair

Hundreds of wonderful new books for sale! Contest, drawings, prizes! Gift certificates available. Proceeds help fund next year’s WAW festival. All are welcome! (Closed during the Costume Parade)


7:30 am-4:30 pm    WES auditorium



Wednesday Word Games

Students in grades 1-6 are invited stay and play with PTO parents and Williams College students in the WES cafeteria from 1:30-3:00. Come play Scrabble, Bananagrams, Boggle and more. Enrollment is limited to 30 students.

Extended book fair hours for everyone special in your child’s life! Proceeds help fund next year’s WAW festival. The pizza dinner is a fundraiser for the 6th grade’s spring trip to Cape Cod. All are welcome!

Berkshire Theater Group's Production of local author Ty Allan Jackson’s

12:30            ‘62 Center        Theater company arrives

1:00            WES students and staff depart for ‘62 Center

1:30-2:30 pm        ‘62 Center        All grades watch production and head back
