Author Kate Messner

Kate Messner is an award-winning author whose books for kids have been New York Times Notable, Junior Library Guild, IndieBound and Bank Street College of Education Best Books selections. The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z. was the winner of the 2010 E.B. White Read Aloud Award for Older Readers. She will give a presentation entitled Are We There Yet?: A Novels Journey to the third through sixth graders, and she will run writing workshops in the fourth grade classrooms.

Read a description of Kate’s presentation: “Sometimes, when you’re a kid, writing assignments seem to go on forever, like a long, long car ride. This interactive workshop takes kids along on the journey a book makes on its way to publication. Kate shares the story of one of her books – brainstorming, writing a first draft, revising, getting feedback from friends, revising, finding a publisher, revising again, sending a new draft, revising again (are you noticing a trend?), copy editing, book and cover design, and finally publishing. Kate will share early drafts, photographs of her (sometimes crazy) writing process, and actual revision letters from her editors. Students will read some text excerpts and have a chance to practice their editing skills, too.”

Author Timothy Basil Ering

Timothy Basil Ering is a children’s book author, an illustrator, a fine artist, and a concept artist. Along with creating book illustrations, art for gallery exhibitions, art for video game scenics and character concepts, and writing children’s books, Tim has visited schools around the USA, Canada, and as far abroad as Burma in Southeast Asia that have noted his author/ illustrator presentations as “captivating, inspiring, and motivating.” WES hosted Timothy 10 years ago, and we are thrilled to have him back. He will present to Pre-K through second graders, and he will run writing and drawing workshops in the second grade classrooms.

He writes about his presentation: “With projected images, I share my childhood background, the grand adventure of art school, the hard work it took to create my 1st published book and the book projects that followed that have been a total joy for me as an illustrator, and an author. I share with students the things that inspire me, and how doing the things that you love, can inspire your very own wondrous ideas.”
